   Basic Rug Care

Rugs deserve the same care as wall-to-wall carpeting and, in some cases, require special attention.

• Washing rugs – If your rug is small and the label says “machine washable”, shake the rug outside first and then put it in the washing machine at the recommended temperature. Use warm water (90 to 105 degrees) and a mild detergent. Tumble dry your rug at the lowest heat setting.

• Beating larger rugs – If your larger rug is easy to pick up, shake it outside first; then put it over a clothesline and beat it. Next, take the rug inside and vacuum it. If the label says dry clean only, then roll it up and take it to Essis & Sons Carpet One.
• Vacuuming area rugs – Area rugs with fringe require a special technique. Use gentle suction and start from the center of the carpet, vacuuming toward the fringe and being careful not to catch the strands in the beater bar of the vacuum cleaner. Lift the carpet edge to vacuum beneath the fringe.

Carpet Cleaning and Maintenance

The beauty and life of your carpet depends on the care it receives. Quality carpet that is well-maintained should last approximately 10-15 years. Proper cleaning will keep it looking great for its full lifetime, help improve your indoor air quality and help you adhere to your carpet warranties.
The right cleaning helps safeguard your carpet investment by keeping you from having to replace it before its time. Cleaning your carpet the right way is easier than you think. All it takes is a little knowledge about how to select the right carpet cleaning products and the right way to clean your carpet – form spot to interim cleaning to knowing when to call in the professionals.

Below are three simple steps to keeping your carpet clean and looking great:

• Vacuum at the right frequency
• Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not
  damage the carpet.
• Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18
  months to remove embedded dirt and grime.
  

Preventing dirt and grime from getting on the carpet in the first place is a great way to start keeping it clean. The following hints can help stop dirt in its tracks.

• Use mats – Outdoor and indoor mats or runners can reduce the amount of dirt that enters the house.


• Take off your shoes – You can save wear and tear on carpet by asking everyone to take off his/her shoes before entering your home.


• Change your air filters – Change air filters in your heating and air-conditioning systems as recommended. The more dust and particles removed by the filter, the less that fall on the carpet.

SPOT CLEANING PROCEDURES

Check daily for spots and treat immediately. Prompt attention to spills and spots greatly reduces the probability of a permanent stain. Pat liquids with an absorbent cloth or plain white paper towel. Continue to pat until you no longer get any transfer. Gently scrape up solid material and vacuum (do not add moisture). If any residue remains, follow the procedures listed below for the particular spot.

Water-based spots
(Alcohol, baby formula, clay, cough syrup, jelly, juice, ketchup and milk)
1. Pat or extract as much of the spot as you can.
2. Flush the remaining spot with clear water. Gently pat the spill,
working from the outer edge toward the center to avoid spreading
the spot. Continue to pat until you do not get any transfer.
3. If a spot remains, use a CI Seal of Approval certified
general purpose spot cleaner using the same technique as
described above.
4. Thoroughly rinse the area and pat to remove excess
moisture.

Special water-based spots
(Coffee, cola, tea or wine)
1. Follow the steps 1-3 listed above.
2. If a spot still remains, apply a specialty tannin stain
remover such as Prochem’s Coffee and Tannin Spotter and
agitate gently.
3. Pat or blot until you do not get any transfer.
4. Rinse thoroughly and pat to remove excess moisture.

Oil-based, greasy spots

(Asphalt, cosmetics, crayons, glue, grease, gum, oil paint, salad dressing or tar)

1. Gently scrape and lift as much loose residue as possible with a dull knife or spoon.

2. Apply a specialty POG (paint, oil, grease) gel spotter, such as Prochem’s Citrus Gel or Chempsec’s Liqua-Gel, directly to the spot.

 3. Agitate the gel into the spot and allow 1 to 2 minutes to sit.

4. Gently scrape up residue, using a dull knife or spoon.

 

OTHER FLOOR CARE

Hardwood Floors
Prevent scratches and dulling caused by dust with a use of rugs or mats at all entrances. Vacuum with a suction action or dust with a mop at least once a week. Polyurethane or similar surfaces require a damp mop for routine clean ups. Never clean wax finished floors with water or even a damp mop. Follow the manufacturers’ directions for bigger clean ups, otherwise use a solution of ¼ cup white vinegar in 4 cups of warm water. When using a damp rag or sponge, wipe the floor dry as you go. Oil, soaps or ammonia products can cause damage and dull surface finishes.

Tile/Stone
Regular sweeping and an occasional wiping with a damp sponge
mop, using a small amount of soap-less detergent in warm water will
clean your ceramic tile beautifully. Soaps are not recommended as
they leave a film which dulls the surface and promotes mildew. Acid
cleaner, steel wool pads and vinegar are also NOT recommended
due to the damage caused to the grout.

Laminate
Regular sweeping and an occasional wipe over with a mop or damp cloth is usually all the cleaning that it needs.

Resilient Flooring/Vinyl Flooring
Only the basic maintenance is required for this type of flooring. Spills and messes are easily wiped up. Regular vacuuming and occasional damp mopping and washing with a manufacturers recommended non-abrasive cleaner will eliminate dust and dirt particles.
